Meet Jonny Ellison, our exceptional Design Associate, whose insights and experiences reflect the talent and dedication that make our team truly unique.
From his early career to his evolution at Air, Jonny’s reflections offer an inspiring glimpse into his journey, memorable projects, and the collaborative spirit that drives our success. Here’s what Jonny had to share:
Before Air
What were you doing before joining Air?
“My design career began in 1989 at a consultancy in Camden Town, where I worked on exhibition design as well as print-based graphics.”
Role Evolution
Can you share your journey at Air, from when you first started to now, and how your responsibilities have evolved over time?
“I joined Air in February 2000, bringing a decade of design experience but still with plenty to learn. Initially, my role was primarily focused on graphics projects. However, the company soon started shifting towards wayfinding, and I embraced this new direction wholeheartedly. Each project allowed me to gain valuable experience. From relatively humble beginnings, I’ve grown into a core team member and wayfinding project leader, with nearly 25 years at Air, how time flies!”
Memorable Projects
Is there a memorable project you’ve worked on that stands out to you? What made it so enjoyable?
“There have been so many standout projects over the years. Walking barefoot on an uninhabited Red Sea island for a site visit was a surreal experience, but one of my personal favourites would be Cardiff city and St David’s Shopping Centre wayfinding. This multi-layered project included city-centre pedestrian signage for Cardiff and mall signage for the redeveloped St David’s Shopping Centre. It was a truly satisfying, start-to-finish team effort—and what a fantastic city to work in!”
Your Role at Air
What do you find most fulfilling about your role at Air?
“Over the years, I’ve gained experience and confidence, often without realising it. I really enjoy working as part of a team and find it incredibly rewarding to pass on my knowledge and experience. At the same time, I believe there’s always something new to learn. Teamwork provides endless opportunities to grow and be inspired by others.”
Team Dynamics
How has collaboration within the team shaped your experience and contributions?
“I’ve touched on this already, but working solo in a ‘silo’ can be challenging. Collaborating with someone else—or ideally as part of a team—is so much better. It allows us to bounce ideas off each other, sense-check concepts, and tap into combined creative thinking.”
