Introducing Eusebi Vickers: Air’s First Graduate of the Internship Programme
We are thrilled to introduce Eusebi, our first graduate of the internship programme, who has now joined the team as a graduate designer.
Below, Eusebi shares a bit about his background, his experience so far and his aspirations for the future.
Inspiration and Internship Experience
What first sparked your interest in wayfinding and how did your internship at Air help shape your approach?
“I joined Air as a recent architecture graduate with little experience of the industry and professional work environments. The wayfinding internship at Air provided me with the opportunity to take design and process skills I had learnt at university, apply them in a real-world context, whilst pushing me to keep learning from the experienced team around me about a sector of the industry that I had not been exposed to before.”
Design Background and Career Path
Can you tell us more about your design background and the path that brought you here?
“I studied Maths, Physics and Spanish at A-Level, hoping to go into some type of engineering, but I quickly realised that I leaned towards a more creative field of work. This led me to apply for architecture at university, which I saw as a balance between technical skills, creativity and expression. Through university, I gained a passion for other areas of design in and around architecture, such as product and graphic design. Coming out of university, I saw a chance to gain knowledge and experience in these related fields, a chance that might not come around later in my career.”
Memorable Projects
Is there a memorable project you’ve worked on that stands out to you? What made it so enjoyable?
“There have been so many standout projects over the years. Walking barefoot on an uninhabited Red Sea island for a site visit was a surreal experience, but one of my personal favourites would be Cardiff city and St David’s Shopping Centre wayfinding. This multi-layered project included city-centre pedestrian signage, retail wayfinding, and mall signage for the redeveloped St David’s Shopping Centre. It was a truly satisfying, start-to-finish team effort and what a fantastic city to work in!”
Transition from Intern to Full-Time Role
As the first intern in our new programme, how has the transition to a full-time role felt? What’s been familiar and what’s felt new?
“Coming almost straight out of university and into the internship programme was definitely a big adjustment. I feel that having studied architecture, where we were pushed to independently manage and execute large design projects for months at a time, I was well prepared to tackle the scope of work and pace. However, the change from working for yourself and your own deadlines to working for a client and their timescale definitely brought a new sort of pressure that I was not accustomed to. Whereas I was used to having long periods of time to finish a large body of work, I have now had to stay on top of multiple projects at once, adapting to what needs to be done on a week-by-week basis, which has been a welcome challenge.”
Creative Highlights and Challenges
Which projects have you found most creatively rewarding or challenging since joining, and why?
“Since joining in January, I have already worked in some way or another on almost ten different projects. Being part of the concept design stage for one project was the most creatively fulfilling. It allowed me to re-engage with the design process, taking on client feedback to slowly hone in on a worked-through idea. In terms of a challenge, I was proud to complete the sign specification drawing package and sign location package for a residential development almost independently, using skills I had only learnt the month before.”
Future Development and Personal Goals
How do you see yourself developing further within the team? What are your personal goals for growth?
“I am still relatively new to Air and have much to learn from the team. I am keen to take on the challenge of responsibility as I find my way into the design industry with Air. At some point in the future, I hope to return to university to complete my Master’s in architecture and continue developing my perspective on design.”
Thank you Eusebi for sharing your experience and reflections. We’re so pleased to have you on the team and can’t wait to see what’s next!
