The VIVO! Market Bratislava opened in 2020 as a new concept within the VIVO! shopping centre an indoor farmers' market combining fresh produce, artisanal foods, and local dining within a purpose-designed retail environment. Immofinanz commissioned Air Design to develop the interior design concept, modular unit system, and brand strategy for the market.
The design brief centred on flexibility. The modular system uses steel frames with wooden infills, allowing the market to reconfigure around seasonal changes, tenant needs, and potential rollout to other VIVO! locations across Central and Eastern Europe. Individual units can be added, removed, or repositioned — a practical requirement given that many of the market’s tenants are small local traders rather than established retail brands.
Biophilic design principles were applied throughout — high-level planting and ambient lighting create an atmosphere distinct from the conventional shopping centre food hall, encouraging visitors to slow down and explore rather than pass through. The result is a dwell-time environment that benefits both the market’s tenants and the wider centre.
The yield increase of 10% across the VIVO! estate following the market’s introduction reflects the commercial value of this type of destination-within-a-destination thinking. For more on our retail interior design and brand strategy work, visit our portfolio.
