Sign Design Society award for excellence in multiple language and multi-script signage

With over 50,000 miles of track, approximately 1.1 billion passengers annually, and around 11,000 stations, the second-largest rail network in the world required a robust wayfinding and signage system. Air Design developed a comprehensive, adaptable solution to meet these demands.

The system spans all station types, from small rural stops to major urban hubs, accommodating diverse language needs across the network. Signage is designed in the primary language and English as standard, with an option for a third language where needed. Using a consistent three-colour palette of red, grey, and white, each sign ensures high visibility in various conditions, with primary and secondary information clearly separated for easy navigation. This approach earned a Sign Design Society award for excellence in multiple language and multi-script signage.

To enhance legibility, we created a custom typeface, FSRailway, optimised for both Roman and Cyrillic scripts. Pictograms based on AIGA standards were custom-designed to align with the typeface. For resilience, external signs are stove enamelled to withstand extreme weather, while internal signs are powder-coated.

A comprehensive signage manual supports consistent rollout across all stations, ensuring seamless passenger navigation and brand coherence. Designed with interchangeable components, the system is both sustainable and cost-effective, providing a durable solution for one of the world’s most expansive rail networks.

Originally appointed to review existing signage system, we were soon asked to develop a set of guidelines for use across the entire railways network of stations. This covered all sizes and types, from large urban hubs to tiny platforms in the wilderness.
